Overview

What Is Image Conversion?

Image conversion is the process of changing a picture from one file format to another — for example, from PNG to JPEG, or from BMP to WebP. Different formats suit different needs: JPEG and WebP are great for photos and web use because they compress well; PNG preserves transparency and is lossless; BMP is uncompressed; ICO is used for favicons and app icons; AVIF is a modern format that often produces the smallest files at similar quality.

Our online image converter runs entirely on your device. You upload an image (or several), choose the output format and optional quality and resize settings, and the tool processes and encodes it in the new format. Nothing is sent to a server — your files stay on your device, which keeps your content private and avoids upload limits.

Converting images is useful when a website or app only accepts certain formats (e.g. JPEG or PNG), when you want to reduce file size for email or web (e.g. PNG to WebP), or when you need a specific format for print or design tools. Batch conversion lets you process many files at once to the same format and settings, saving time compared to converting one by one in a desktop app.

You can use this tool on any device — Windows, Mac, Linux, or mobile — without installing software. There is no account required, no usage cap, and no watermark. You get instant conversion, optional resize, quality control for lossy formats, and an automatic download of each converted file.

Features

Discover Features

Wide format support, batch conversion, quality control, resize, and full privacy — all on your device

Wide Format Support

Convert between JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, GIF, AVIF, and ICO. Upload from any of these formats plus TIFF and SVG. All conversions happen on your device with no server upload.

Batch Conversion

Add multiple images at once and convert them all to the same format with one click. Each file shows its status (pending, converting, done) and you can download each result or remove files from the list as needed.

Quality Control

For lossy formats (JPEG, WebP, AVIF) choose a quality level from 1 to 100 with a slider; default is 85 for a good balance. For lossless formats (PNG, BMP, GIF, ICO) no quality setting is needed — the output is lossless.

Resize & Scale

Optionally resize images before converting. Enter width and height, lock aspect ratio, or use presets (50%, 75%, 100%, 150%, 200%). Useful for thumbnails, avatars, or reducing file size.

Privacy-First

Images are decoded and re-encoded entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded to any server. Your files never leave your device — close the tab and nothing remains.

Instant Download

After conversion, the result downloads automatically. You also see a preview of the converted image and its new file size so you can verify quality and size before saving elsewhere.

User Questions & Reviews

Real questions from users and expert answers from the OnlinePCTools team

I have a mix of PNG and JPEG screenshots and need everything as WebP for my website. Can I do them all at once?

EV

Elena Vasquez

Web Developer, Madrid, Spain

Yes. Add all your images (drag and drop or select multiple). Choose WebP as the output format, set the quality slider (e.g. 85), then click Convert all. Each file will be converted and downloaded. Everything is processed on your device, so your screenshots never leave your device.

Does converting to JPEG lose quality? I need to send photos by email without huge file sizes.

DC

David Chen

Photographer, Singapore

JPEG is lossy, so some detail is discarded. At quality 85 (the default), the result is usually visually very close to the original and much smaller. For email, 80–90 is a good range. If you need no loss at all, choose PNG instead — files will be larger but pixel-perfect.

Are my images uploaded to your servers? I'm converting confidential design mockups.

RF

Rachel Foster

UX Designer, Austin, USA

No. Conversion happens entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to our or any third-party server. Close the tab and no copy remains. It is as private as using a desktop app on your own computer.

Can I create a favicon (ICO) from a PNG logo? What size will it be?

OH

Omar Hassan

Front-End Dev, Cairo, Egypt

Yes. Upload your PNG, select ICO as the output format, and convert. The tool produces an ICO file containing a 32×32 version of your image (suitable for favicons). The ICO format stores the image data in a way that is universally recognized for favicons and app icons.

Use Cases

Common scenarios where image format conversion saves time and solves compatibility issues

Web Development

Convert design assets to WebP or AVIF for smaller page weight and faster loading. Batch-convert PNGs to JPEG where transparency is not needed.

Social Media

Resize and convert images to the dimensions and formats required by different platforms (e.g. JPEG for Instagram, PNG for graphics) without installing software.

Print Design

Convert BMP or TIFF sources to high-quality JPEG or PNG for print workflows, or scale images to exact dimensions needed for layout.

Email Marketing

Resize and compress images to JPEG or WebP so email campaigns load quickly and stay under size limits while keeping visuals clear.

App Development

Generate ICO or PNG assets in multiple sizes from a single source image for app icons and splash screens. Use the resize option for exact dimensions.

Archiving

Convert legacy BMP or TIFF files to PNG for lossless archiving, or to JPEG for smaller archives when full fidelity is not required.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries about the Image Converter tool

Q1. What image formats can I convert from?
You can upload JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF (.tiff, .tif), AVIF, ICO, and SVG. The tool processes your images on your device. SVG and some exotic formats may have limitations during conversion.
Q2. What formats can I convert to?
You can convert to JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, GIF, AVIF, and ICO. JPEG, WebP, and AVIF support a quality slider. PNG, BMP, GIF, and ICO are lossless. AVIF and GIF export depend on device support; you may see a fallback message if unsupported.
Q3. Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion happens entirely on your device. Nothing is sent over the internet.
Q4. Can I convert multiple files at once?
Yes. Add multiple files via drag and drop or the file picker. Each file appears in the list with a preview and status. Use Convert all to process every pending file in sequence, or Convert on individual items.
Q5. How does the resize option work?
Enable “Resize image” and enter width and/or height. With “Lock aspect ratio” on, changing one dimension updates the other. You can also use the preset buttons (50%, 75%, 100%, 150%, 200%) to scale by percentage. Resize is applied before conversion.
Q6. Why did my AVIF or GIF conversion fail?
Some devices do not yet support encoding to AVIF or GIF. If you see an error, try another format (e.g. PNG instead of GIF, or WebP instead of AVIF).
Q7. Is the tool free?
Yes. The Image Converter is free to use. No account, no limits, no watermarks. Use it as often as you need for personal or commercial projects.
Q8. Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. The tool works on any modern mobile device. You can tap to upload images, choose format and options, and convert. Large images or many files may take longer on mobile.
