Overview

What Is PDF Splitting?

PDF splitting is the process of taking one PDF document and extracting a subset of its pages into a new, separate PDF file. Instead of sharing or printing the whole document, you create a smaller file that contains only the pages you need — for example, one chapter, the signed pages of a contract, or specific slides from a presentation.

Splitting is the opposite of merging: merging combines multiple PDFs into one, while splitting takes one PDF and produces a new file with only selected pages. The original file is not modified; you download a new PDF that contains just the chosen pages in the order they appeared. This is useful when a single PDF holds mixed content and you want to share or archive only part of it.

Our online PDF splitter processes everything on your device. You add a PDF, then select pages by clicking them in the grid or by entering ranges (e.g. 1–5, 8, 10–12). The tool shows how many pages are selected, and when you click Extract, it builds a new PDF with only those pages and downloads it. Your file is never sent to our servers, so your documents stay private.

Unlike desktop software that requires installation and often a paid license, our online splitter works on any device — Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, or tablet. There is nothing to download, no account to create, and no limit on how many times you can split. Pages are copied directly from the source PDF without re-rendering, so the extracted file retains 100% of the original quality.

Extract PDF pages with a secure, fast, and intuitive splitting experience

Page Range and Grid Selection

Select pages by clicking them in the visual grid — each page thumbnail highlights when selected. Or type ranges like 1-5, 8, 10-12 in the range field and click Apply to select many pages at once. The selected count updates in real time so you always know how many pages will be in the new PDF.

Select All / Deselect All

Quickly select every page with one click when you want to extract the full document into a new file, or clear the selection and start over when you need to pick a different subset. No need to click page by page when you want everything or nothing.

100% Private & Secure

Your PDF is never uploaded to any server, so your content stays on your device and remains completely private. Sensitive contracts, personal documents, and confidential reports are never sent over the internet. Close the tab and nothing remains.

Preserves Quality and Order

Extracted pages are copied directly from the source PDF without re-rendering or re-compressing. The new file retains the original quality of every page — images, text, and layout are unchanged. Pages appear in the same order you selected, so your output matches your intent exactly.

No Registration or Limits

Use the splitter immediately without creating an account. There are no watermarks, no sign-up walls, and no limits on how many times you can split PDFs. Extract pages from as many documents as you need, for personal or commercial use, with no strings attached.

Works on Any Device

No desktop app or installation required. The splitter works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebooks, tablets, and phones. Open the page, add your PDF, select the pages you need, and download the new file from any device.

How It Works

Steps to Split a PDF and Extract Pages

Extract specific pages from your PDF in four simple steps — no sign-up required

01
01

Upload Your PDF

Click the upload area or drag and drop a PDF file. The tool loads the file and displays the total page count in a thumbnail grid. Only valid PDFs are accepted. Your file never leaves your device.

02
02

Select Pages to Extract

Use the page grid to click individual pages (they highlight when selected), or use the page range field: enter ranges like 1-5, 8, 10-12 and click Apply. Use Select All or Deselect All to quickly choose or clear pages. The count of selected pages is shown.

03
03

Click Extract

When at least one page is selected, click the Extract button. The tool builds a new PDF containing only those pages. Processing happens on your device and may take a moment for larger PDFs — everything stays private and secure.

04
04

Download the New PDF

When extraction is complete, a new PDF containing only the selected pages downloads automatically. The original file is unchanged; you now have a separate, smaller PDF to share, archive, or use as needed.

Our Users' Questions & Reviews

Verified questions from real users and expert answers from the OnlinePCTools team

I have a 50-page report but only need to send the executive summary (pages 1–3) and the appendix (pages 45–50) to a client. Can I extract just those pages into one PDF?

RK

Rachel Kim

Consultant, Seoul, South Korea

Yes. You can select non-consecutive pages in two ways: either click pages 1, 2, 3, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, and 50 in the grid, or use the range field and enter 1-3, 45-50 and click Apply. The extracted PDF will contain exactly those nine pages in that order. The client receives a single, focused file without the rest of the report.

I need to pull out only the signed signature pages from a 30-page contract to send to the other party. Will the tool preserve the exact look of those pages for legal purposes?

TW

Thomas Weber

Legal Counsel, Berlin, Germany

Yes. The splitter copies the selected pages byte-for-byte from the original PDF — there is no re-encoding, re-compression, or re-rendering. Fonts, signatures, stamps, and layout are preserved exactly. The new PDF is a true subset of the original and is suitable for legal use. Your original contract remains untouched on your device.

Are my documents uploaded to your servers? I'm splitting PDFs that contain confidential project data.

NP

Nina Patel

Product Manager, Bangalore, India

No. The entire split process runs on your device. Your PDF is read, the selected pages are copied into a new document, and the result is offered for download — all without leaving your machine. We have no external processing for your file content and no storage. Once you're done, nothing remains. Your confidential data never leaves your device.

Can I extract every other page (e.g. 1, 3, 5, 7…) from a long document without selecting each one manually?

AR

Alex Rivera

Researcher, Mexico City, Mexico

You can use the range field to specify non-consecutive pages. For every other page you would enter something like 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 (or continue for as many as you need) and click Apply. For very long sequences, typing 1-50 with a step is not supported in the range parser, so you would either type the list (e.g. 1,3,5,7,9) or select those pages in the grid. For a 20-page document that is still quick; for hundreds of pages, the grid and range together still make it faster than manual extraction in most desktop tools.

Use Cases

Who Needs a PDF Splitter?

Common scenarios where extracting PDF pages saves time and keeps documents focused

Sharing Specific Sections

Extract one chapter, one section, or a few pages from a long document to send to someone without sharing the entire file. Perfect for textbooks, reports, or manuals where only a portion is relevant to the recipient.

Contracts and Signed Pages

Pull out only the signature pages or executed exhibits to send to the other party or for filing. Keep the rest of the contract internal while sharing only what is needed for records or compliance.

Presentations and Handouts

Create a shorter PDF from selected slides or handouts for a specific meeting or audience. Distribute only the slides that matter instead of the full deck, reducing clutter and keeping focus.

Archiving and Organizing

Break a large scanned document into logical parts — by section, date, or topic — and save each part as its own PDF. Easier filing, retrieval, and naming for archives and document management.

Removing or Isolating Pages

Extract only the pages you need and discard the rest, or isolate confidential pages so they are not included when sharing the main document. Keep one master file and create clean, purpose-built extracts for different recipients.

Application and Submission Packets

From a single multi-part PDF, extract only the cover letter, resume, or specific forms required by a portal. Submit exactly what is asked for without uploading the entire packet or manually printing to PDF from different sources.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries and answers about the PDF Split Tool

Q1. Is it free to split a PDF?
Yes. Our PDF splitter is free to use with no sign-up. You can extract pages from as many PDFs as you want. There are no watermarks, no hidden fees, and no usage limits. Use it for personal or commercial purposes anytime.
Q2. Are my files sent to your servers?
No. Splitting is done entirely on your device — nothing is sent anywhere. We have no external processing or storage for your documents. Your files remain 100% private.
Q3. Can I extract non-consecutive pages?
Yes. You can select any combination of pages — e.g. 1, 3, 5-7, 10. Use the grid to click individual pages or the range field (e.g. 1,3,5-7,10) and click Apply. The new PDF will contain only those pages in the order they appear in the original document.
Q4. Is the original PDF modified?
No. The original file you upload is never changed. The tool creates a new PDF that contains only the pages you chose and offers it for download. Your source file remains as-is on your device.
Q5. Does splitting reduce quality?
No. We copy the selected pages as-is into the new PDF. There is no re-encoding, re-compression, or re-rendering. Quality, fonts, images, and layout match the original. The output is a true subset of the source.
Q6. Do I need to install software?
No. You only need an internet connection to load the page; all processing happens on your device. No desktop app or plugins are required.
Q7. Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked before splitting. Use our PDF Unlocker tool first: enter the password there and download the unlocked file. Then open that file in the Split PDF tool. Your files never leave your device.
Q8. What if my PDF has hundreds of pages?
The tool can handle large PDFs. The page grid and range field both work with documents of many pages. Processing may take a bit longer for very large files. If you experience slowness, try closing other tabs or splitting in smaller batches (e.g. extract one range at a time).
