Overview

What Is a DOCX File?

DOCX is the default document format for Microsoft Word (Office 2007 and later). It is based on the Office Open XML standard: a ZIP archive containing XML files that describe the document's structure, styles, and content. This makes it easier for tools like our viewer to read and convert content without requiring Word.

Our free DOCX Viewer converts the document to HTML entirely on your device. Use Add File(s) or Add Folder to load multiple DOCX files, search by name, and view in Preview or Plain Text. Headings, paragraphs, lists, images, and tables are preserved. No Microsoft Word required — compatible with Windows 10/11 and macOS.

Use the viewer to open .docx files on a computer without Word, to quickly preview a document without uploading it, or to read confidential files with the assurance that nothing leaves your device.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the DOCX Viewer

Q1. What is a DOCX file?
DOCX is the default format for Microsoft Word documents (Office 2007 and later). It is a ZIP archive containing XML files that describe the document structure, styles, and content. Our viewer converts that content to HTML for easy reading.
Q2. Do you upload my DOCX file?
No. The DOCX Viewer processes your file entirely on your device. Your data is never sent to our servers.
Q3. Can I add a folder of DOCX files?
Yes. Use the Add Folder button to select a folder; the viewer will list all .docx files in it. You can then search by file name and open any file. Add Folder is supported in Chrome, Edge, and other modern browsers.
Q4. What are Preview and Plain Text modes?
Preview shows the document with formatting, images, headings, tables, and layout (like a read-only Word view). Plain Text shows only the text content, which is useful for quick reading or copying.
Q5. Does it open files with macros or restricted editing?
The viewer can often read content from DOCX files that contain macros, are marked as restricted editing, or marked as final. Content is extracted in read-only form where the format allows.
Q6. Does it work without Word? On Windows and Mac?
Yes. No installation of Microsoft Word is required. The DOCX viewer freeware is compatible with Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS — use any modern browser.
Q7. Is the DOCX Viewer free?
Yes. The tool is free to use. Some daily limits may apply; check the tool for details.
Q8. What if conversion fails?
If the file is corrupted or not a valid DOCX, you'll see an error message. Files with heavy protection or unusual structure may not convert fully. Try re-saving as .docx in Word if possible.
Q9. Does it work on mobile?
Yes. You can open the DOCX Viewer on a phone or tablet and select .docx files from your device. Add Folder may not be available on all mobile browsers.
