Overview

What Is Image Compression?

Image compression reduces the file size of a picture so it takes less storage and loads faster, while trying to keep the image looking good. There are two main approaches: lossless compression (no visible quality loss, smaller gains in size) and lossy compression (some detail is discarded for much smaller files). Tools like ours let you choose a quality level so you balance size and appearance.

Our online image compressor runs entirely on your device. You add one or more images, pick a compression level (Low, Medium, High, or Custom) and optional output format, and the tool processes and re-encodes each image. Nothing is sent to a server — your files stay on your device, which keeps your content private and avoids upload limits.

Compressing images is useful for websites (faster loading), email (smaller attachments), social media (meeting size limits), and cloud storage (saving space). Batch compression lets you process many files at once with the same settings. You see before and after file sizes and a percentage saved, plus a visual before/after comparison so you can confirm quality before downloading.

You can use this tool on any device — Windows, Mac, Linux, or mobile — without installing software. There is no account required, no usage cap, and no watermark. You get quality presets, optional max dimensions, format options (same as input, JPEG, PNG, WebP), and a Download All option for batch results.

Batch compression, smart format detection, quality presets, before/after comparison, privacy-first, and cross-device support

Batch Compression

Upload and compress multiple images at once. Each file shows a thumbnail, original and compressed size, and savings percentage. Compress all with one click or process files individually.

Smart Format Detection

Supports JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, ICO, and SVG. The tool keeps transparency when needed (PNG/WebP) and uses the best output format based on your choice or the original image.

Quality Presets

Choose Low (quality 90) for minimal size reduction and maximum quality, Medium (70) for a balanced result, or High (40) for maximum compression. Use Custom to set any quality from 1 to 100.

Before/After Comparison

See original and compressed images side by side with a slider overlay. Compare visual quality and file sizes (original → new size with percentage saved in green) before downloading.

Privacy-First

All compression runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded to any server — your files never leave your device.

Cross-Device

Use the compressor on any device — Windows, Mac, Linux, or mobile — without installing software. Just open the page, add images, and compress.

User Questions & Reviews

Real questions from users and expert answers from the OnlinePCTools team

I have hundreds of product photos for my site. Can I compress them all at once and still keep them looking good?

PS

Priya Sharma

E-commerce Manager, Mumbai, India

Yes. Add all your images (drag and drop or select multiple), choose the Medium preset for a balanced result, then click Compress all. Each file is processed on your device with a progress indicator. You get original vs compressed size and percentage saved. Use the before/after slider to confirm quality, then Download All. Everything stays on your device.

Do compressed images lose quality? I need sharp photos for my portfolio.

MW

Marcus Webb

Photographer, London, UK

Compression can reduce quality when you use lossy formats (JPEG/WebP) and lower quality settings. Use the Low preset (quality 90) for minimal size reduction and maximum quality — ideal for portfolios. You can also choose Custom and set 90–95. The before/after comparison lets you check sharpness before downloading.

Are my images sent to your servers? I'm compressing confidential documents.

LP

Lisa Park

Legal Assistant, Seoul, South Korea

No. Compression happens entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded to our or any third-party server. Close the tab and no copy remains. It is as private as using desktop software on your own computer.

— OnlinePCTools Team

Can I force all images to WebP for my website even if they're PNG or JPEG?

AR

Alex Rivera

Front-End Developer, Mexico City, Mexico

Yes. After uploading, set Output format to WebP. Every image will be compressed and converted to WebP. Use the Medium or High preset to control file size. Images with transparency are encoded with alpha support in WebP. You can then download each file or use Download All.

Use Cases

Common scenarios where image compression saves space and speeds up loading

Website Optimization

Reduce image file sizes for faster page loads. Compress JPG and PNG assets while keeping visual quality, or convert to WebP for even smaller files and better performance.

Email Attachments

Shrink photos and screenshots so they fit within email size limits and load quickly for recipients. Use Medium or High compression for noticeable size reduction.

Social Media

Compress images before posting to stay under platform limits and speed up uploads. Batch compress a folder of photos and keep quality with the Low or Medium preset.

E-commerce

Reduce product image sizes for listings and galleries without losing clarity. Batch process and use the before/after slider to ensure thumbnails and full-size images look good.

Cloud Storage

Free up space by compressing photos and screenshots before backing them up. Keep originals elsewhere and use compressed copies for everyday access.

Mobile Apps

Prepare image assets at smaller file sizes for app store listings, in-app graphics, and thumbnails. Use max dimensions to cap width/height and reduce size further.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries about the Image Compressor tool

Q1. What image formats can I compress?
You can upload JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF (.tiff, .tif), AVIF, ICO, and SVG. The tool compresses or converts them on your device. Output can stay the same as input or be forced to JPEG, PNG, or WebP.
Q2. Will compression reduce image quality?
For lossy formats (JPEG, WebP), lower quality settings reduce file size but can reduce visual quality. Use the Low preset (90) or Custom with a high value for minimal quality loss. PNG re-encoding is lossless but may still reduce file size by stripping metadata. The before/after slider helps you verify results.
Q3. Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All compression happens entirely on your device. Nothing is sent over the internet.
Q4. Can I compress multiple files at once?
Yes. Add multiple files via drag and drop or the file picker. Each file shows a thumbnail, original size, and after compression the new size and percentage saved. Use Compress all to process every pending file, or Compress on individual items. Download each file or use Download All.
Q5. What does the max dimensions option do?
When enabled, you can set a maximum width and/or height. If an image exceeds these, it is resized (keeping aspect ratio) before compression. This helps reduce file size further for very large images.
Q6. Why choose Same as input vs JPEG/PNG/WebP?
Same as input keeps the format when possible and uses smart detection: images with transparency output as PNG or WebP; others can be JPEG or WebP for good compression. Forcing JPEG, PNG, or WebP converts every image to that format — useful for consistent website assets or email.
Q7. Is the tool free?
Yes. The Image Compressor is free to use. No account, no limits, no watermarks. Use it as often as you need for personal or commercial projects.
Q8. Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. The tool works on any modern mobile device. You can tap to upload images, choose presets and format, and compress. Large images or many files may take longer on mobile.
