About

What Is an EML File?

EML is a standard file format for storing a single email message, defined by RFC 822 and extended with MIME for attachments and multipart content. Most email clients — including Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, and Gmail (when exporting) — can save or export messages as .eml files.

An EML file contains two main parts: a header section (From, To, Subject, Date, CC, Content-Type, etc.) and a body. The body can be plain text, HTML, or multipart MIME with both text and HTML, plus attachments. Our free EML Viewer parses this structure instantly so you can read the email without installing any software.

Because EML is plain text (with optional base64-encoded parts), it’s easy to archive, move between systems, and inspect. Use the viewer to open saved emails on a machine that doesn’t have an email client, to check exported EML during migration, or to quickly see headers and body of a forwarded message — all while keeping your data completely private.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the EML Viewer

Q1. What is an EML file?
EML is a standard email format (RFC 822) used to store a single email message. Many email clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, etc.) can save or export messages as .eml. The file contains headers (From, To, Subject, Date, etc.) and the body, and can include attachments via MIME.
Q2. Do you upload my EML file?
No. Your file is processed entirely on your own device and never leaves it. Nothing is sent to our servers or any third party.
Q3. Can I view HTML emails?
Yes. If the EML uses multipart MIME and includes a text/html part, the viewer displays the HTML body. Plain text parts are also supported.
Q4. Can I download attachments?
This viewer lists attachment names and sizes from the EML. To extract or download binary attachments you would need a dedicated EML extractor or your email client.
Q5. Why are some headers missing?
Only common headers (From, To, Subject, Date, CC, Content-Type) are shown in the summary table. The raw message may contain more headers; the parser reads them but the simplified view highlights the most useful ones.
Q6. Does it work on mobile?
Yes. You can open the EML Viewer on a phone or tablet, tap the upload area, and select an .eml file from your device to view it.
Q7. Is the EML Viewer free?
Yes. The tool is free to use with no sign-up, no limits, and no premium tier.
Q8. What if my EML is corrupted?
If the file is malformed or truncated, parsing may fail and you’ll see an error. Try opening the file in an email client to confirm it’s valid, or re-export it from the source.
