About

What Is an OLM File?

OLM is the archive format used by Microsoft Outlook for Mac. When you export your mailbox from Outlook on macOS, the result is an .olm file — a ZIP archive containing XML files for each email message, along with contacts, calendar events, and other mailbox data organized in a folder hierarchy.

Each email message is stored as an individual XML file with tags like OPFMessageCopySubject, OPFMessageCopySenderAddress, OPFMessageCopyBody, and OPFMessageCopyHTMLBody. Our free OLM Viewer parses these XML files and presents emails in an easy-to-browse split-pane interface.

Use the viewer to preview an OLM export before migrating to another platform, to verify backups, or to read archived emails without having Outlook installed. Your data stays private on your device at all times.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the OLM Viewer

Q1. What is an OLM file?
OLM (Outlook for Mac) is an archive format used by Microsoft Outlook on macOS. It is essentially a ZIP file containing XML files that represent emails, contacts, calendar events, and other mailbox data. Each email is stored as an individual XML file within a folder hierarchy.
Q2. Do you upload my OLM file?
No. The OLM Viewer processes your file entirely on your device using JavaScript. Your data is never sent to our servers — it stays completely private.
Q3. How does the viewer parse OLM files?
OLM files are ZIP archives. The viewer unzips the archive in the browser using JSZip, finds all XML files, and parses them using the browser's built-in DOMParser. It extracts email fields like subject, sender, recipient, date, and body from standard OLM XML tags.
Q4. Can I search through the emails?
Yes. There is a search input above the email list that filters by subject, sender, recipient, body text, and folder name in real time.
Q5. What if the viewer finds no emails?
If no emails are found in the standard OLM XML format, the viewer shows a listing of all files inside the ZIP archive as a fallback, so you can see the structure of the OLM file.
Q6. Does it show HTML email bodies?
Yes. If an email contains an HTML body, it is rendered in a sandboxed iframe for safe viewing. Plain-text bodies are displayed as preformatted text.
Q7. Does it work on mobile?
Yes. You can open the OLM Viewer on a phone or tablet, tap the upload area, and select an .olm file from your device to browse all emails.
Q8. Is the OLM Viewer free?
Yes. The tool is free to use with no sign-up and no limits on file size or number of emails.
