About

What Is a Gmail Takeout MBOX File?

When you export your Gmail data through Google Takeout, your emails are saved in the MBOX format — a standard way of storing multiple email messages in a single file. Each message is separated by a line starting with "From " and includes full RFC 822 headers plus the message body.

What makes Gmail Takeout MBOX files special is the X-Gmail-Labels header that Google adds to each message. This header preserves your Gmail label structure (Inbox, Sent, Starred, Important, custom labels) so you can see exactly how each email was organized in your Gmail account.

Our free Gmail Takeout Viewer parses these files in your browser, extracts the Gmail-specific labels, and presents your emails in a familiar interface with label filtering, search, and sorting. Your data stays on your device at all times — nothing is uploaded to any server.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Gmail Takeout Viewer

Q1. How do I get a Gmail Takeout MBOX file?
Go to takeout.google.com, sign in with your Google account, deselect all products, then select only 'Mail'. Choose MBOX format and create your export. Google will prepare a download link (it may take hours for large mailboxes).
Q2. Do you upload my Gmail data?
No. Your MBOX file is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server. Your emails remain completely private.
Q3. What are X-Gmail-Labels?
X-Gmail-Labels is a custom email header that Google adds to Takeout MBOX exports. It contains a comma-separated list of Gmail labels (Inbox, Sent, Starred, Important, custom labels, etc.) so you can see how the email was categorized in Gmail.
Q4. Can I filter emails by Gmail labels?
Yes. The viewer extracts all labels and shows them as clickable filter pills. Click a label to show only emails with that label. Click again or click 'All' to remove the filter.
Q5. Does it support large Takeout files?
The file is loaded entirely into memory, so very large exports (hundreds of MB or more) may cause slowdowns. For best performance, export individual Gmail labels from Takeout instead of your entire mailbox.
Q6. Can I see starred and important emails?
Yes. Emails with the 'Starred' label show a star icon in the list and detail view. 'Important' and other system labels appear as colored badges.
Q7. Is this viewer free?
Yes. The Gmail Takeout Viewer is completely free with no sign-up, no limits, and no premium tier.
Q8. Can I download or export individual emails?
This viewer is read-only. It displays the contents of your Takeout MBOX but does not export or download individual messages. Use an email client or a dedicated converter for that.
