What Is a Gmail Takeout MBOX File?
When you export your Gmail data through Google Takeout, your emails are saved in the MBOX format — a standard way of storing multiple email messages in a single file. Each message is separated by a line starting with "From " and includes full RFC 822 headers plus the message body.
What makes Gmail Takeout MBOX files special is the X-Gmail-Labels header that Google adds to each message. This header preserves your Gmail label structure (Inbox, Sent, Starred, Important, custom labels) so you can see exactly how each email was organized in your Gmail account.
Our free Gmail Takeout Viewer parses these files in your browser, extracts the Gmail-specific labels, and presents your emails in a familiar interface with label filtering, search, and sorting. Your data stays on your device at all times — nothing is uploaded to any server.
