What Is PDF Repair & PDF Recovery?

PDF files can become corrupted due to incomplete downloads, storage failures, email encoding issues, or bugs in the software that generated them. Common symptoms include error messages like "Failed to load PDF", blank pages, missing content, or viewers refusing to open the file entirely. A PDF recovery tool like this one helps you repair and recover damaged files.

Our Repair PDF and PDF recovery tool addresses these issues by rebuilding the document from scratch. It first attempts a structure-level repair using pdf-lib — copying every page, annotation, and metadata field into a brand-new PDF with a valid cross-reference table and object tree.

If structure repair fails (e.g. the internal objects are too damaged), the tool falls back to an advance scan that is more lenient with corrupt files. It renders each page at 2× resolution and embeds the result as a high-quality image in a fresh PDF. This recovers the visual content even from severely damaged files and saves the corrupt PDF as a healthy document in a new location.

Features of the PDF Repair & Recovery Tool

Two-stage PDF recovery and repair strategy with detailed reporting

Structure Repair

Rebuilds the PDF's internal cross-reference table and object structure by copying every page into a fresh document, fixing most corruption issues automatically.

Image-Based Recovery

When structure repair fails, each page is rendered at high resolution and embedded as an image in a new PDF — recovering visual content from severely damaged files.

Page Recovery

Recovers all readable pages from the source PDF. The repair report shows exactly how many pages were successfully extracted and rebuilt.

Detailed Repair Report

After repair, see the method used, pages recovered, file size comparison, metadata preservation status, and any warnings — with color-coded status indicators.

Metadata Preservation

Title, author, subject, creator, producer, and keywords are copied from the original PDF to the repaired version whenever possible.

100% Private & Secure

Your PDF never leaves your device. All repair processing happens locally in your browser using pdf-lib and pdfjs-dist. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the PDF Repair tool

Q1. What is PDF recovery and what types of corruption can this tool fix?
PDF recovery means repairing or recovering content from damaged or corrupted PDF files. This tool can fix cross-reference table errors, broken internal object structure, incomplete file streams, and other structural issues. It rebuilds the PDF from scratch by copying pages into a new document. For severely damaged files, the advance scan falls back to rendering pages as images so you can recover and save the content as a healthy document.
Q2. Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The entire repair process runs locally in your browser using pdf-lib and pdfjs-dist. Your PDF file never leaves your device.
Q3. What is the difference between structure repair and image-based recovery?
Structure repair copies pages directly from the source PDF, preserving text, fonts, vector graphics, and metadata. Image-based recovery renders each page at 2× resolution and embeds it as a JPEG image — this recovers the visual content but text will no longer be selectable or searchable.
Q4. Will the repaired PDF look exactly like the original?
With structure repair, the output is a faithful copy of the original with rebuilt internal structure. With image-based recovery, the visual appearance is preserved at high resolution but text selectability and vector sharpness at extreme zoom may differ.
Q5. Can it fix password-protected PDFs?
The tool attempts to load encrypted PDFs with the ignoreEncryption option. This works for some files with owner-level restrictions but will not bypass user-password-protected PDFs that require a password to open.
Q6. Is there a file size limit?
There is no hard limit, but since processing happens in your browser, very large PDFs (over 200 MB) may be slow or cause the browser to run out of memory. For best results, keep files under 100 MB.
Q7. Is the Repair PDF tool free?
Yes. The tool is completely free to use with no sign-up, no limits, and no watermarks on the output.
Q8. What if the repair fails?
If both structure repair and image-based recovery fail, the PDF is likely too severely damaged for any automated tool. The error message will indicate what went wrong. You may want to try recovering the file from a backup or contacting the original sender.
